This initial three-year project is led by Dr. Devin Holterman, a postdoctoral fellow at Y2Y and UNBC, with Dr. Aerin Jacob (Y2Y) and Dr. Pamela Wright (UNBC)

Dr. Devin Holterman is a postdoctoral fellow at the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative (Y2Y) and the University of Northern British Columbia where he leads the Human Dimensions of Conservation in the Yellowstone to Yukon Region project. Devin is focused on building an evidence-based research program in the human dimensions of conservation that supports conservation decision-making by Y2Y and its various partners.

As a political ecologist, Devin’s research interests also include the political, economic, and ecological dynamics of biodiversity conservation and its intersections with the extractive industries.

In Tanzania, his doctoral research examined how transnational resource extraction benefits from the biodiversity crisis, how protected areas are becoming increasing fortified, and how growing trends in the militarization of conservation are impacting the lives of people and wildlife. Devin co-founded the Beyond Extraction Research Collective and has worked with various not-for-profit groups in Canada and beyond.

In 2020, Devin received his doctoral degree from York University’s Department of Geography. He holds a Masters of Environmental Studies from York, and an applied communications degree from Mount Royal University in Calgary.
